First-Time Event Nerves: How to Manage Fear Before Long Course Weekend

First-Time Event Nerves: How to Manage Fear Before Long Course Weekend

STRIVE    STRIVE

Feeling nervous before your first Long Course Weekend? You’re not doing anything wrong. Nerves are often a sign that you’re about to do something meaningful.

The atmosphere.
The logistics.
The kit.
The distance.
The unknown.
It can all feel big. But you don’t need to be fearless to take part. You just need to know how to work with fear, rather than letting it stop you.

Why First-Time Nerves Feel So Big

When you do something new, your brain naturally looks for risk.
It asks:

“What if I’m not ready?”
“What if I get it wrong?”
“What if I’m too slow?”
“What if I can’t finish?”

These thoughts can feel convincing. But they are not facts. They are protective thoughts. Your brain is trying to keep you safe by pulling you back towards what feels familiar. Growth happens when you decide to move forward anyway.

Fear Does Not Mean Stop
One of the biggest mindset shifts is learning to see fear differently. Fear can mean:
You care.
You’re growing.
You’re stretching yourself.
You’re entering new territory.
You’re about to create a story you’ll remember.
If part of you is wondering whether you can really do it, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be there. It
means you’ve chosen something that matters

5 Mindset Tools for First-Timers

  1. Create a Calm Script
Choose a few phrases to repeat when nerves rise.
“I can take this one step at a time.”
    “Nerves are energy.”
“I don’t need to be perfect. I just need to keep moving.”
  2. Visualise the Full Experience
Don’t just picture the finish line. Picture arriving, starting, settling in, facing a tough moment and
    carrying on.
  3. Break It Down
Big challenges feel overwhelming when you see them as one huge thing. Focus on the next stroke,
    pedal, step or moment.
  4. Define Success Early
Success could be showing up, managing nerves, completing your distance or simply finishing proud.
  5. Remember Your Why
When nerves get loud, your reason needs to be louder. Why did you sign up? Come back to that.

On the Start Line

Look around and remember:
Everyone has doubts.
Everyone had to start somewhere.
Everyone is carrying their own story.
Then bring your focus back to you. Breathe. Relax your shoulders. Start steady. You belong there.
Not because you feel fearless. But because you were brave enough to show up.

Your STRIVE Reminder
You don’t have to silence every doubt.
You don’t have to feel confident every day.
You don’t have to become fearless.
You just have to keep choosing action over avoidance.
That is how confidence is built.
Feeling nervous about your first Long Course Weekend? That’s not a sign to step back. It’s a sign
you’re stepping into something that matters.
